Drivers who have the bad habit of flicking your cigarette butts out of windows better beware. In early November 2017, one such car owner was shocked to receive a letter from NEA which demanded they name the driver who was driving the vehicle at the time of offence. NEA with the help of LTA took enforcement action on a tip-off from the public which alleged that the said driver threw his cigarette butt out of the car window along Tampines Avenue 5.

What is not clear is whether the whistle blower provided concrete evidence to back up such a claim. If no evidence was furnished, how does NEA ascertain the validity of such claims? Could this whistle blowing culture against litter bugs be subject to abuse and harassment? If the driver did not cooperate with NEA, he could be subject to a fine as high as $2,000 over this littering offence.

Regardless, drivers who smoke take note of this incident and refrain from doing the same. You never know when a sabo king pulls up beside you and films your littering deed. Drive safe and do not litter.
